It depends on the species, age, and location. Most mature trees are fine with a check every 3 to 5 years. Young trees benefit from more frequent, lighter structural pruning while they're establishing their shape. If a tree is near your house or a power line, we'll usually recommend a shorter interval.

Every cut is a wound, so pruning always carries some stress for the tree. The risk comes from over-pruning or cutting at the wrong time of year, not from pruning itself. We limit how much of the canopy we remove in a single visit and time major cuts around the tree's dormant season where possible.

We can reduce a tree's size to a degree, but there's a limit to how much we'll take off in one visit without harming the tree. If a tree has genuinely outgrown its space, we'll say so, and we'll talk through whether reduction, staged pruning over a few years, or removal is the more honest long-term answer.

No. Topping — cutting a tree back to stubs — creates weak regrowth and long-term hazard risk. It's a fast fix that costs more later. We use crown reduction and thinning instead, which controls size while keeping the tree structurally sound.

Look for crossing branches, dead wood, or limbs hanging over your roof, driveway, or power lines. If none of that applies, your tree may just be fine as is. We'll always give you a straight answer during an assessment, even if that answer is "not yet."
